Today, we would like to discuss and ponder the topic of ‘Employee loyalty’. Just recently, a few young people in the church mentioned it as a workplace reality these days. From time to time, we would hear about a friend who was retrenched the moment he reached middle age after working in the company for about twenty years.  On one hand, a lot of companies seem ‘heartless’ in terminating their long-term staff with hardly any room for negotiation. On the other hand, many enterprises place an emphasis on the loyalty of employees during recruitment.

Upon hearing the bad and sad news, we are told he did something about it. Nehemiah gave priority to spiritual discipline - prayer  - "...I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven" (1:4). Observe the following: "I sat... wept.... for days...mourned...fasted... and prayed....to the God of heaven" (1:4).

Introduction: He said with thanksgiving, “I used to be arrogant and received little blessing. In these 10 years, I humbled myself and submitted to God. Thus, the Lord blessed me greatly. He poured out so much blessing that there was not enough room to store it. By God’s grace, I succeeded.”

In Biblical history, there were two periods known as the exilic periods (captivity; deportation of leaders and people to a foreign land) which marked a significant turning point in the history of the Jewish people. The land of Judah which was united under King David was divided into the northern and southern kingdom with the passing of King Solomon. The first exile happened in the eighth century (722 BC) with Assyrians conquering the northern kingdom (named Israel) and the fall of their capital Samaria and deporting people to Assyria.

The COVID-19 pandemic which swept the world about a year ago (January 2020), has changed the world from normal to new normal. We have been witnessing unprecedented disruptions, uncertainties and anxieties. Hence, the universal cry for effective political, business and Christian leaders who can lead their countries, companies, and churches respectively is understandable.

Dear friends, have you ever been bullied at the workplace? The mere mention of ‘bullying’ reminds us of our schooldays. However, it does not only occur in school but also at the workplace.
