Last week, we heard about the Polar Story – an amazing story of how a family business can last 94 years!

Kate managed the business for about 20 years. On business and personal trips overseas, she would have divine appointments. Now, these are not prearranged, pre-planned trips. Instead, the occurrences seem to coincidental, except they happened so frequently they cannot be mere chance.

The Polar Café’s very existence from 1926 till the present – through 94 years – is a testament of God’s faithfulness. Many unexpected things happened, but the business was kept going – from its early beginnings, through the Japanese Occupation, its founder’s death, economic turbulence. The business experienced God’s protection and provision through them  all.

Last week, we heard how true love developed only after Dick and Kate got married.

Their two sons, Jonathan and David Cheah now in their forties, are testament of God’s favour and grace.

For Kate, the possibility of bearing children was slim. Medical tests showed that she had only 1 ovary. She also had severe endometriosis – a condition when the tissue lining of the womb which is supposed to grow inside the womb, grows outside it. This can cause trouble to conceive. These 2 conditions made her more than 90% barren.

Every Monday morning at the Melbourne Bible Institute, missionaries from Australia spoke about their work in places that was out of their comfort zones. Kate heard their stories of how they worked among the poor and with lepers, how they walked for miles through jungle, wading through swamps, battling fierce sandstorms, through sickness and pain, being thrown into prisons, encountering life-threatening situations. They were willing to go through all this to share the gospel with people living in faraway places and in harsh conditions.

In the last episode, we heard how the Friday Bible Class impacted Kate during her secondary school years.

After the ‘O’ Level Cambridge examinations at Secondary Four, Kate went on to a three-year Teachers’ Training Course. About 6 months before graduation, her friend, Hian Mee, from the Friday Bible Class, asked her, “Kate, would you like to go with me to study Theology in Melbourne?” Kate was surprised but she answered, “If it is God’s will, I will go with you.” Kate didn’t mean it – and couldn’t have realised how prophetic her words were.
