Hello, brothers and sisters, welcome to Workplace Strategy, a series jointly produced by Global Reachout and Global Jireh. This is Episode 13 on Sexual Harassment. Sexual harassment is a long-standing problem, but people, especially women, have usually been unwilling to speak up as they are embarrassed, ashamed, guilty, afraid or feel it is too painful to talk about.
In recent years, you may have noticed, increasing reports in the newspapers and on the internet on the “Me Too” movement. It is an international movement where more and more women make public their sexual harassment and abuse by the prominent men whom they work for.
Today, we’ll discuss the part of the harasser while next week, we’ll focus on the part of the victim.
What exactly is sexual harassment? Many experts define sexual harassment as being sexually offensive to others, making the other party feel uncomfortable, whether it is legal or not. This includes physical offences, such as touching another person; verbal offences, such as seemingly playful comments on another’s physical appearance, or silent offences, such as prolonged gazing or inappropriate expressions. So, flirtatious gazes, flirtatious jokes, slightly frivolous physical contact ... all these, if it makes other party feel awkward and mentally stressed, including violating the other party's will, is enough to constitute sexual harassment. And workplace sexual harassment is not confined to the office environment. It can happen during corporate functions, team-building events, or during out-of-town business trips. It is also not limited to men being the harassers and women being the victims. Because women can be the harassers and men the victims too. And sexual harassment can also happen between persons of the same sex.
