Angelie: Hi everyone, I am Angelie and welcome to this week’s episode of Workplace Strategy. We have invited Dr. Michelle to answer your questions in this section called ‘Workplace Strategy Forum’. Dr. Michelle specialises in chemical engineering, and is an environmental senior specialist. She has plenty of experience in the workplace, and also as an Adult Sunday School teacher. If you have any queries about the workplace related to our Christian faith, we welcome you to explore these issues together with us. Dr. Michelle, welcome to ‘Workplace Strategy Forum’.
Michelle: Thanks Angelie. Dear friends, I am very happy to have the opportunity to share and interact with all of you in this programme! Hi, Angelie, what is the question for us today?
Angelie: Someone posed this question. He said, “After a recent promotion, I have been tasked to recruit new staff. So, what are the criteria for us to hire staff? Currently, I either worry about the inabilities of our staff that result in poor work performance, or I am anxious that they are too capable and will take over my position. I know that I shouldn’t have such thoughts, but they are my concerns now. I hope to hear your perspective.”
Michelle: Okay. First of all, I would like to thank this friend for his trust in us and for his willingness to share his honest thoughts with us. Indeed, this is a very practical issue. When we reach the middle management level at our workplace, we may need to consider this issue. What are the criteria for hiring our staff? The answer is very straightforward. We need to select someone who is able to assume the position. This is the basic requirement. However, how do we pick the right candidate if there is a large number of applicants for the position? I remember that once, my company had to recruit workers during an economic downturn and we received hundreds of application forms just for one singleposition.
Angelie: Such a situation is common, especially for popular job positions. There may be hundreds, even thousands of people competing for a single position. At this moment, how should the manager choose a subordinate who will be a help and a blessing to the company instead of being a hindrance?
