Angelie: Hi everyone, I am Angelie and welcome to the ‘Workplace Strategy Forum’. The ‘Workplace Strategy Forum’ is a platform to provide answers to work or workplace related questions posed by our listeners. And we are inviting professionals to step into the show and give us professional views based on biblical principles. Today, our special guest is Dr. Michelle from Singapore. Let’s welcome Dr. Michelle.
Michelle: Thanks Angelie and hello everyone!
Angelie: Hello, Dr. Michelle! Welcome to the show. Dr. Michelle is an environmental senior specialist with decades of experience in the workplace. She is a senior Sunday school teacher at her church and often answers questions related to the workplace at various churches. Today, the question we're going to ask Dr. Michelle to answer for us comes from a Christian brother.
He said: As soon as I started my job as an engineer, my boss liked me very much, and he gave me the task of developing a new product for the company. However, product development itself requires a certain amount of experience, which I don’t have. I asked for advice from experienced seniors, but because the product cycle was short, they couldn't provide me with particularly useful guidance. Plus, I'm not familiar with a lot of existing equipment, so I'm really unsure if I am capable of doing this task. At the moment, our company has two other important projects going on at the same time, each led by two senior engineers. I suppose it's inevitable that my boss will compare me to them. Moreover, my colleagues in other departments are also looking at how I, as a Christian, can turn things around by "miracles". How can I take God's lead in this challenge and lead a victorious Christian life to give Him glory and even change the workplace culture?
Wow, this Christian brother is up against a big challenge indeed! Dr. Michelle, what do you think?
Michelle: Well, I would like to thank this Christian brother for raising this real-life question to us. It is indeed a mismatch between responsibilities and abilities. And yet, it's a common phenomenon in the workplace. There are many reasons for this problem. For example, from the boss's point of view, it may be that a more suitable person cannot be found at the moment, or the company's economic benefits or financial conditions do not allow it, and the boss has to make this arrangement which is not the most ideal obviously.
Angelie: Yeah, if they have a choice, employers usually don't want to put an inexperienced person in charge of an important project because it means a significant level of risk for the company. It's a decision that’s risky for both the boss and the employee.
