Hello friends, thank you for tuning in to Workplace Strategy.

Do you like presents and gifts? I certainly do, especially at Christmas or Chinese New Year! In many business dealings, especially in Asia, it is common that people give gifts to their company superiors. Firms also give each other gifts too. I’m sure your company would have both given and received from suppliers and clients on special occasions: seasonal fruit boxes, food hampers, calendars, diaries and cartons of wine. Even at the funerals, we see beautiful condolence flower wreaths from clients to the families of a company’s founder who had just passed on. And of course, there are gifts and flowers for the grand opening of small and large shops. In fact, businesses specializing in corporate gift-giving have sprung up! Sometimes, gifts can be in the form of monetary discounts and rebates. And in Asian cultures, companies would often host large lunches or dinners during which business deals are struck.

Some time ago, one of our listeners in China posted a question which went something like this: “I am working in a company that promotes products in hospitals. It is an acceptable practice in our industry to please our clients with gifts. Even our leaders, colleagues as well as our competitors agree readily to this. And very often, instead of just receiving our gifts, the clients specify the gifts they would like. I am puzzled, should Christians be involved in this?”
