Hello friends, a very warm welcome to Workplace Strategy.

About a decade ago, ‘entrepreneurship’ was a big deal. Setting up one’s own business was not something an ordinary individual would think of doing easily. But today with how technology has changed lives, everyone can aspire to be an entrepreneur.  I’m sure you know of friends or perhaps even you, have set up businesses.

So, should a Christian start a business? There is no explicit answer from the Bible but we could follow the principle in 1 Corinthians 10:23. The English Standard Version (ESV) says, ‘"All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.’

The most important question to ask really is, why you wish to start your own business. Some reasons we often hear are:

  • “I want to start a business because I have a bad relationship with my boss.”
  • “I have been working hard for years and yet I didn’t get a promotion and the pay has not increased much ….”
  • “I want to be my own boss, control my time and enjoy financial freedom!”

Certainly ‘the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence’ – it may seem a bright opportunity to end a difficult current work situation, more appealing than the present daily grind at work. Being in charge of one’s own business seems better than working for someone else. You are in control of how time and your money is spent. But is that really so?
