Hello friends, welcome to Workplace Strategy.

Of all the numerous challenges at our workplaces, being retrenched and facing unemployment must be the worst and most difficult as it affects our livelihood and hence our families.

Today, our employability depends not only on our work performance but also on unexpected external factors beyond our control: business transformation, economic slowdown, trade wars and even a pandemic such as Covid-19. Many, even those in top management, in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and even multi-national corporations (MNCs) risk losing their jobs. Older workers are hit particularly hard.

We can, however, be better prepared when unemployment does strike. May we suggest two types of preparation and three lists to make.

Preparation

1. Psychological preparation

In the twenty-first century, we must accept the reality that no job lasts for life. Our world is increasingly embracing technology which is developing faster than ever. Our job scope will change, company transfers are expected, and unemployment will hit us at some point or another. It is a case of ‘not if, but when’. We have to be mentally prepared.

Being unemployed may be for a longer time than expected. And it’s not because we are not trying hard enough. Take for instance, the Covid-19 pandemic. It has robbed many people of their jobs. And because the whole world’s economy has slowed down drastically, there are more people scrambling for jobs than there are jobs available. The psychological pressure can be overwhelming. It’s a     terribly difficult time, especially for sole breadwinners who have lost their jobs overnight.
