Hello friends, welcome back to the series, Workplace Strategy.

Today, no matter which industry you are in, we’re all involved in ‘management’. Think about it: some of you manage people or manage assets, and certainly in whatever position you’re in, you manage yourself, your work, projects and tasks. Right?

The concept of management was first introduced by Peter Drucker in 1954. I’m sure you know and have used many of his management concepts. You would have heard of MBO (management by objectives), privatization theory, ‘knowledge workers’, goal management, knowledge-based management and the S.M.A.R.T. (SMART) method. Peter Drucker wrote about 30 to 40 books in his lifetime. Besides topics on management, he also wrote about issues on sociology, politics, and economics. In fact, many of his books are required reading for business school students around the world. He is rightly known as the Father of Modern Management.

Drucker's keen insight and foresight on business management and his depth of knowledge in history and society, far exceeded those of his contemporaries. Drucker was gifted in foreseeing future trends by his sharp observation of current trends. In the early 1950s, Drucker pointed out that computers would transform the business world. In 1961, he advised that the United States should focus on the rise of Japanese industry. The 1970s, he saw as a decade of inflation. And he was the first to warn that Japan could fall into economic stagflation – a situation where inflation increases while economic growth is at a standstill or decreases, resulting in high unemployment. For the 1990s, he coined the term ‘knowledge economy’.
