Hello friends! Welcome to Workplace Strategy.

Should Christians, as the Lord’s faithful servants, argue? Can arguments ever be effective?

Disagreements at the workplace occur because each of us hold differing viewpoints and sometimes, different personal agendas. Here’s a common situation: Your department is holding a meeting to discuss a particular issue which you’re concerned about. You have spent time researching and come up with a good proposal. At the meeting, you present your ideas. What responses would you expect?

Surely, we would be most happy to hear, “Brilliant! I totally agree with you. Let’s do what you have suggested!” But in reality, some people would probably agree with you and others who would oppose. A few might even loudly exclaim, “I disagree with you!” and suggest some other ideas. How would you feel? To be honest, I would feel like I’ve been slapped in the face and … hmmph … feel quite unfriendly towards that person with the differing viewpoint.

In the workplace, it is inevitable that we will encounter many different opinions about any single issue. Some people express their disagreements unpleasantly. In such cases, our personal attitude is extremely crucial because that will not only affect our mood, it will also determine our relationship with our colleagues. It may even affect our career prospects. If we hold leadership positions in an organisation, our attitudes and responses towards different views, to some extent, will affect the future of the organisation.
