Last week, we talked about a few trivial matters that are easily overlooked in the workplace: punctuality, procrastination, and being organized in our filing and personal workspaces. If these 3 small matters are well done, we would be more efficient, more effective and less tired. Today, here are another 3 trivial matters that affect productivity and how we can manage them better: interruptions, meetings and the daily commute.

1. Be Productive Despite Interruptions

Does this happen to you in the office? You are concentrating on your work and suddenly your boss calls you over. A colleague comes to your desk and asks you for a favour. Then you become very busy, either helping your boss locate information or teaching another colleague to use computer applications. In short, you always respond to the demands of others. You are known to be capable and helpful.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying we shouldn’t help others. No, no, not at all! As Christians, helping others should be our priority. In fact, we are called to what Philippians 2:4 says: Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Many verses in the Bible speak of helping others and so, we should.

Of course, if it takes just a little time and we know we can finish our own tasks by the deadline or even earlier, by all means, we should help our colleagues. But we do need to understand too, that if helping another causes us to delay our own work which in turn affects others, then we need to rethink how we help. After all, we have our tasks within our job scope, and we are employed to fulfil those responsibilities. So it isn’t wise to always set aside our own tasks to help others with theirs, leaving our own tasks undone. But I do agree it is a fine balance.
