  • Musings on the Workplace (11) : Rules Are There to Improve Efficiencies
Speaker: Dr. Michelle Liew | Video Editor: Goh Soo Mun
05 Dec 2024

How is a salaried man to bless a corporation to grow and raise his personal worth? And, how can a business operator keep his business to stay firm as a rock amidst the rough winds and waves as he contributes to society and seek the welfare of his staff?

Welcome to our programme series “Musings at the Workplace” and hear Dr Liew as she shares the way to handle difficult situations at the workplace.

As the saying goes: “As a country has its laws, so a family its rules.” Workplace folks are to abide by the rules of the workplace they are in. You may ask: What if the rules of the company are not reasonable? How would a non-managerial worker with no authority react, then? Or, would your thinking be like so: “Look, I’m just a small fry here after all; not as though I have loads of choices to talk about. Either I go along the flow, or call it quits….”

Now, this is the typical mindset of a wage earner. Workplace people with “ownership mindsets” have better options, however.

We now invite Dr Liew to show us how such a “bad rule” came to roost and how to get ourselves out of its way.

At this moment, let us reflect on the following questions.

1.   What is the most obvious rule at your workplace? Do you consider it as a good rule or a bad one? Why?

2.   How is your team faring in terms of efficiencies and effectiveness? Where does its strength lie, and where can improvement be made?

3.   What principles are applied to guide the workflow to ensure efficient execution and strengthen the effectiveness in your corporation?

I look forward to your sharing. May we sharpen one another and achieve excellence at the workplace.
