  • [Bread and Butter]Reborn To Live Abundantly (02): BREATHE
Paster Luke Tan
21 Aug 2019

In this session, we talk about the first thing you do when you are born to stay alive, and that is to breathe.

Today, as I came to do this recording, I was stressed.  I have been swarmed with activities in the week, and I had fears of not being well-prepared for the recording, and will end up wasting the crew’s time.

What do we do when we are stressed?  Yes, we take deep breaths.  Because, stress always seems to lead us to death, while breathing seems to be a reminder of life.

God reveals to us in His word, how He imparted life to man, in Gen 2:7. “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

Wow! Just think about that!  Every time we breathe, we remember that the life in us is the very breath of God, breathed into us.

From this revelation, we understand that our life is not accidental, but given purposefully.
We understand that God is invisible, but He is real, as we carry His breath and life in us.

As I look at the trees moving, experience tells me that there is a wind blowing.
What is pushing the trees is moving air, which is invisible to us.  What in our present age, we live and connect with many invisible things like electricity, radio waves, micro waves, light waves, all which are invisible, but we know of their existence because of what they do for us.
In the same way, God is invisible, but the signs of the creator surround us.  Much evidence exists of his divine design that rules out all possibilities of all things coming together just by chance.

The sooner we can come to the conclusion that God is real, the sooner we can turn to Him.

Any parent will understand the worry he may have for his child, when he is out of his sight.  We feel correctly, that we are responsible for our children and should watch out for them especially when they are still young.  But surely, we cannot watch our children 24 hours a day, and there are times that we must sleep, or be busy with something else, or are apart.  As much as we can try, there will always be gaps in our efforts, and if you really stick to your growing child, you will not be able to rest, or do anything else.  However, a believer can pray to the invisible God.  He can pray for protection and free himself from an unhealthy and hopeless fear.

When we are born again, the first step is to breathe spiritually, that is to depend on God through prayer.  God has given us breath to sustain our physical bodies, but He is also able to give us all that we need for our lives in the spirit.

Indeed, the air around us reminds us of God's invisible spirit, that is everywhere, life-sustaining, and can be very powerful.

It can refresh you, and it can make an eagle soar.  It can build a fire, and it can lift a jumbo jet.

As we look at Jesus' life, we witness the powerful things that he did, from healing and deliverance, to amazing miracles.  As we study all these closely, we discover that his secret is prayer to God.  It is first, a change in himself, to desire and pursue God and His glory; and then as a vessel for God, he was used powerfully by God.

A Roman military officer understood this spiritual truth perfectly from what he said in Luke 7:6-8So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

May we quickly discover God, just like this centurion, and understand the spiritual workings that is invisible but real, among us, and turn to him, as we move in this new abundant life, by his spirit.

Dear friend, if you have yet to have a relationship with this God I have describing, perhaps you can take the first step today, to pray with me.

Father in heaven, help me in my unbelief.  I am tired and stressed out, and I have given up using my efforts to strive in this life.

Father, from what I have heard today, I so much want and long to turn to you.  Father, help me in my belief of you.  Today, as I pray to you in the name of Jesus, God come and show yourself to me.  Come and guide me and lead me.  Show me that you are real.

Father as I put my faith in you, as I read your word and try to apply all these in my life, and obey all that you have taught, Father help me to exercise my faith: to pray for myself, to pray for all those around me, to pray for those I love, to pray for those who are sick.

And Father, show me that you are real by answering my prayers.

Father, help me Lord, and I ask these sincerely, praying in the name of Jesus my Lord, Amen!

(Song: e.g. A Broken Spirit and a Contrite Heart)
See you at the next session!  Have a blessed day!
