  • Light in the Marketplace (03) : Gospel at Workplace
Speaker: Tan Kang Fun
11 Dec 2024

Dear All, my name is Tan Kang Fun but I am better known as KF Tan in the market place. I am currently the CEO of a health trust company in Singapore. The testimonies I am sharing took place earlier in my career at a chemical company where I was the General Manager, at a high performance material manufacturing plant where I was the Managing Director, and at a healthcare company where I was the CFO & COO.

The thought of sharing the gospel with someone is likened to chills running down one’s spine! Every Christian has been commanded to share the good news about Jesus Christ but, sadly, not many obeyed that commandment. Matthew 28:19-20 tells us “19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.” So, how can I have the courage to share the gospel with fellow colleagues at workplace? Remember, you have that important prayer weapon for you to unleash whenever you want. It is always the work of the Holy Spirit to convict an unbeliever’s heart of sins in order for that person to have the opportunity to come to the saving grace of Christ. It is not our work to convert someone to Christian but His, the Almighty God. We are merely a vessel used by God for His glory. We can plant the seed of gospel in somebody’s heart and another may water it before it was being harvested by someone else. When that happens, praise be to God our Heavenly Father for another soul is saved!

First Example

My approach to sharing the gospel at workplace is to use global events and relate them to the Bible. For instance, you hear of wars and rumours of wars, and there have also been more frequent natural disasters like earthquakes, famines and spread of pestilences eg Spanish Flu, Bubonic plaque, SARS and, most recently, Covid-19. Matthew 24 tells us clearly that all these must happen and the intensity will get more frequent as the second coming of Christ gets nearer. Christ even likened His coming to a woman giving birth. The first sign of a woman about to give birth is the contraction. The contractions will come and go, and as the arrival of the baby gets nearer, the intensity of birth contractions get more frequent and finally the baby is borned. Jesus Christ is putting this in layman language for us to understand. What He is saying is that all the wars and natural disaster events will happen over the centuries but the frequency will increase as His second coming comes nearer. For instance, statistics produced by ResearchGate GmBH has shown that earthquakes occurrence in year 1000 with less than 10 to more than 3,200 by year 2000. At this juncture, I will also briefly elaborate on what is meant by the second coming of Christ. It is an event that Christ will come back to earth to reign as King of kings before the world is completely destroyed by human annihilation through the Armageddon wars.

Usually colleagues gather together during lunch time and somebody started off by touching on news about world events on one of the disasters mentioned above. I’ll take the opportunity to jump in and agree to what being said as it is already in the news. At the same time, I’ll point them to the Bible where it was said the frequency of these natural disasters or wars are getting more frequent over the centuries just like a woman having birth pangs before giving birth ie the contraction comes and goes and will get more frequent/intense before the arrival of the baby. When this happens, then the prophecy on the second coming of Christ is near. I will share with them Matthew 24:3-14 where Jesus shared about the signs of end times and the end of age ….. And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered and said to them ………. And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. ….…….. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. ……………. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” I will wrap up with John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Up to here, if there is further interest in the Bible events, I’ll share the gospel by sharing my testimony. I find that the easiest way to share the gospel is to share your own testimony of how you come to the saving grace of Christ.

Second Example

Another approach that I would use is to look at the political environment in the Middle East. Again, there will be news about the Middle East regarding conflict between the Jews and their Arab neighbours. I will start off by saying that Israel will forever be a sore thumb in the Middle East (Deuteronomy 28:25 “The Lord will cause you ………….. and you shall become troublesome to all the kingdoms of the earth.). There will be no peace in the Middle East until the second coming of Christ. How can I back up what I just said?

Well, I will start off by sharing that Jesus had prophesised that God’s temple in Jerusalem will be utterly destroyed with not even a single stone left unturned after His resurrection in AD33.  (Matthew 24:1 & 2 “Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”) History tells us that Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in around AD70 and, as a result, the Jewish people were disbanded from Israel. Deuteronomy 28:62-64 tells us this “You shall be left few in number, ………….. and you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess. 64 “Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, ……..”

For almost 2,000 years (from AD70 to 1948), the Jews were without a country! I will also add on to say that many passages in the Old Testament of the Bible already warned the Jews that if they don’t obey God, one day they will be banish to the farthest part of the world, which I have just mentioned above. However, God in His mercy that one day will gather all His chosen people (the Jews) back to Israel, to rebuild the temple of God and bless them with a land flowing with milk and honey. When all these things have happened then the second coming of Christ is near. The Bible tells us that after Israel was erased from the world map, three things must happen before the second coming of Christ is to take place. First, God will gather the Jews and give them back their beloved country called Israel. This actually took place, after almost 2000 years, on 14 May 1948. After the Second World War, with more than 6 million Jews massacred, the United Nations decided to give back to the Jews their ancient land. This resulted in many Jews all over the world started to return to their ancient homeland. Deuteronomy 30:4&5 tells us this “If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you. Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.”

Second event to happen would be the ancient capital of Jerusalem will come under the control of the Jews. This happened in 1967 during the Six-Day War where Israel seized control of all of Jerusalem. The third thing to happen is to rebuild the temple of God on Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. Well, for this to happen at this juncture is almost impossible because what is situated on the site is the third holiest mosque, Dome of the Rock, in the world. If the Jews were to forcibly proceed to rebuild the temple, it may lead to Third World War! I will add on to say that no matter how impossible the situation is, God will ensure that His prophecy will come to pass resulting the temple can be rebuilt peacefully. Isaiah 2:2 tells us that “Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it.”

Since the formation of Israel in 1948, three major Arab-Israeli wars broke out in 1948, 1967 and 1973. Each of the war resulted in victory by Israel over the Arabs. In the 1948 war, five Arab countries were defeated with the help of the British and United States. In the 1967 war, Israel expanded its territory to include Golan Heights, West Bank and Gaza Strip. In the 1973 Yom Kippur War (also known as Ramadan War as it took place during the Muslims fasting month), the attack led by Egypt and Syria was a surprise to Israel as the Jews were celebrating day of repentance of Yom Kippur. Also, it was a fasting month and one would least expect for the Muslims to launch such an assault. Initially, Israel was losing the war but within a week or so it could repel the surprise attack. All these wars have the miraculous stories on how God is on the Israeli side to ensure victories.

After the sharing, if there is further interest in the Bible events, I’ll share the gospel by sharing my testimony. I find that the easiest way to share the gospel is to share your own testimony of how you come to the saving grace of Christ.

I sincerely hope that what I have shared can be a source of encouragement to you in your walk with God. Always remember, you have God with you to lead and guide you at your workplace to overcome challenges. All you need is to reach out to Him in prayer.
