COVID-19 has been around now only for what? Just over 2 and half months, maybe 3 months. Already the whole world is brought to its knees, just because of an invisible virus. Y’know what this reminds me as a Christian? That we don't have any control over our lives. We have no control over many things. We think we have control but that’s a deception. Who would imagine that there will be COVID-19? Who would imagine that a whole city or whole nation will be shut down, locked down? Who would imagine that we would all be worrying about having our meals, worrying about passing these germs or this virus to others? In such a short time, who would imagine that so many would have died?
Reminds me again, how I'm living my life entirely by the grace of God. You see, we are born with an expiry date anyway, and we’re only given a certain window of life to live. For some of us, it may be 90 years, for some 60, for some even younger, shorter. I'm already past 70. I'm glad to be alive. In fact, when I think of people who have passed on, we feel so sad for them, so sorry. But whether we pass on by COVID-19’s devastating blow or by any other way, we still have to pass. And I hope we will pass well.
And that's why I have written this book called Through the Valley, the Art of Living and Leaving Well. The thrust of this book is very simple: I want to live my life meaningfully because I'm a Christian. I want to live my life purposefully because I'm a Christian. Should that day come when God says I got to go home – whether it's by natural death or by illness or by accident – I will not be complaining because I am submitted to God's will. I will do whatever I can to make my life meaningful and purposeful. I will take care of myself: eat well, exercise, be fit. But even with all that, I still have no control over my life. My life is entirely in God's hands. And so when the time comes, I hope that I can say that I’ve left a good legacy.
What is my legacy? It is not about how much money I have, how much power I have. It's not about all that. It's about how well I have lived to make a difference to this world, to make a difference to people who are under my influence: my staff, my colleagues, my friends, that I can make life better for them.
So, when I live here, I also look forward to heaven. If heaven is such a wonderful place, full of joy and peace, then as a Christian, it is my duty to bring a little bit of this heaven to earth. What does that mean? It means that if it is joy in heaven, then why can't I bring some joy to earth? If it is all forgiveness in heaven, why not forgiveness on earth? If it is about good health and good wishes in heaven, why not wish everybody good health and good wishes here? And make a difference. So, living on earth and bringing some bit of heaven to earth also makes life meaningful and purposeful. In the Scriptures, it’s very clearly stated: let your light so shine before men – and women and children – so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Let us, in this time of COVID-19, do good works, continue to do good works: share masks, share sanitizer, share food, don't hoard, be kind to people, be united, and make people feel that we really care that we are going to survive together because we care for each other. Then life will be meaningful, not only for us, for those who are suffering around us. Thank you so much.
