In the past few years, you might have heard about cases involving fraud and scandals. One such case was a Chinese pharmaceutical company which manufactured substandard vaccines meant for the immunization of children. At least 250,000 such doses were produced, and some had already been administered to children. This was not the first complaint against the company. They were punished before, but they still did it anyway. Other cases involved wealth management companies which had boasted high earnings. When cash flow problems occurred, they closed their doors, causing investors to lose a lot of money.

I’m sure, dear listeners, you would know many more such cases. Most of these people who cheat or commit fraud are intelligent, capable people. They could have brought blessings to society – if they had used their intelligence and skills in the right way. However, they misused their gifts and hurt others. But why do these people choose to cheat others when many of them are already so rich?

There is a saying that ‘the winner is king’. Everyone respects the winner; everyone wants to be a winner. Some even say how one wins isn’t as important as winning. As long as one wins, who cares what process one uses, as long as no negative news result. Is this thinking correct?

For example, when the real estate industry is doing well, financial institutions choose to relax the rules to make more money. They may take a higher risk to approve loans to buyers who may not have the ability to repay. Some bankers have been known to sell mortgage-backed bonds to investors who do not know the inside story. Now, if the house prices continue to rise, of course, everyone is happy. Even if the borrower defaults on the mortgage, the bank can still recover the collateral and then after auctioning, the bank will not lose money, and the investor may never know about the work behind-the-scenes. The problem is what happens if the real estate market cools? The buyers would not have enough money to pay off their debts; the bank itself is also be caught in debt. Investors lose all their money and an entire chain of people will be affected.
