In this session, we are going to talk about sensing, and sensing accurately.
When we sense accurately, we define the truth. Imagine you are a new-born baby, and when you grow, you develop your senses. For example, your sense of sight, of hearing, of smell, of taste, and of touch. And through that sense, it tells you of danger. When you feel pain, you sense that something is dangerous, is hurting you, and you should stay away from it. And when you touch a fire, it is hot, and you know that you should not it as it will harm you. These are the senses that will keep you well and alive.
When we develop our senses, we can ‘discover’ the truth. In our lives, there are so many things and voices out there that so many times, we get confused. This person is saying this, that group is saying that, who should we listen to? What is truth? Dear friends, if we think about it, if there is an absolute truth, it can only come from God. And it can only be revealed to us from Him. If we use our senses to discover this truth, we might be near it, but we cannot get a complete picture of it.
There is a famous story of how six blind men were trying to understand what an elephant is.
The six blind men were brought an elephant and they went to different parts of the elephant to feel it, that they may have a feel of what an elephant is like. We have one blind man touching the trunk and thinking that an elephant was like a tree trunk. Another blind man touching the side of the elephant, concluded that the elephant was like a wall. The other two, one touching the ear and the other, the tail, visualized that the elephant was like a big fan, and a thick rope. It shows us a clear picture of how when we use our limited senses, we can arrive at very different understandings of the ‘truth’. Dear friends, even when the blind men put all these pictures together, they will still arrive at a very distorted picture of what an elephant is actually like. Dear friends, this is the same incomplete understanding that we will attain, if we just rely on our human senses to discover God.
However, when our Lord Jesus Christ came to reveal what God the Father is like, thus is what he told us: “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God, and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.”
Jesus Christ came to give us the most complete revelation of God that we can ever have. My friends, I challenge you, if you really want to know what God is like, to know Jesus.
Imagine a person was lost and he was trying to look for a man’s house in a foreign place. First, a friendly stranger came by and offered to help him. He said, “Look! I have a map, and we can go according to the directions that I have obtained from some people, and we can try to find the house of this man, that you are looking for.
As the man was wondering whether to trust and follow this stranger, a second person came along and revealed his identity with his identity card, that he was the son of the man he was looking for. He said, “Hey! I’m the son of the man that you are looking for, and he sent me to you to bring you there!” My friends, which person would you choose to follow? Would you follow the friendly stranger? Or would you follow the son of the man that you are looking for? This is exactly what Jesus had come to do. He had come to lead us back to His Father, to His home.
John 14:1-7
Jesus said this to his disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.”
My friends, it is important for us to be able to see correctly. To see correctly, is to be able to discern right from wrong. My friends, today we have revelation from God Himself, through His Son, Jesus Christ. To tell us the truth, to show us the complete revelation of God the Father, to show us the way back, and to tell us most accurately about our lives on earth.
If you can see correctly, you will want to pursue Jesus, and His truth in the word of God.
My friends, today, in a world full of voices of differing messages, I want to ask you a question, “Would you rather put your faith and trust in fellow, fallible human beings? Would you trust them totally, even if they are academics, celebrities, or rich and established? Would you rather not trust God, your Creator? For what you should be doing on earth; for what is right and wrong?
Friends, if we are able to see accurately, clearly and truly, when our eyes are no longer flawed and no longer blinded…With this new sight, as far as we can see, God will show us His vision. And only when we have this vision, can we know how to get there. And from there, we will have a direction to in, and we will have a hope.
My friends, hope is from God, and He is showing us what it means to live our lives on earth, and where we are going. We know confidently, that after our lives on earth, that when have lived it correctly in His sight, we have lived it well. And we know that we will be going back to Him. For me, I have chosen to see clearly. I have chosen to put my faith and trust in Creator God.
Dear friends, how about you?
Let us pray.
Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to show us what you are like and to lead us back to you. I pray for my friends, that they may also know Jesus and find the way back to you. God, open the eyes of my heart and spirit, that I may see clearly. Help me understand your word, that I may know your will, for me and the world. Let me see what you see, and give me your vision, that I will no longer live my life confused, lost and misled by my senses, but to find my direction and hope in you. I pray
